How to Keep Default Browser with MDT Upgrade to Windows 10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am working on upgrading existing windows 7 clients to Windows 10 (1511) using the MDT upgrade sequence.

My goal is to migrate the default browser choice from windows 7 to 10 in each individual upgrade.

Most of the user configuration is retained after the upgrade, but the default browser reverts back to edge.

    1.        Is this a known issue / default behavior?
    2.        If this is the default, what is the easiest way to migrate the user's default browser choice?

I understand that it is possible to script a check for default browse as part of the upgrade prep, and then import default app settings (using dism.exe) according to that choice in the post-install stage, but I feel there must be a simpler way that I am missing.

    Thanks,

    S.

  • Hi

You can export this reg key with the information on Windows 7.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\http\shell\open\command

Then you can create a DefaultAppAssociations file with only the default browser settings and import it again.

    dism /online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:"c:\temp\DefaultAppAssociations.xml"

    dism /online /Import-DefaultAppAssociations:"c:\temp\DefaultAppAssociations.xml"

    Kind regards
