Excel Services: External Data Refresh Failed RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

In my new Project Server 2013 everything is working fine, excepted Excel Service. When I try to use a simple report as "SimpleProjectList" I get the error:

    "External Data Refresh Failed"

An error occurred while accessing application ID. ProjectServerApplication from Secure Store Service. The following connections failed to refresh: Project Server - Simple Projetcs List."

    Or sometime:

"Access was denied by the external data source. The following connections failed to refresh..."

    Thanks for your help

  • Hi,

Few steps I can think off that may fix your issue:

1 - Delete Excel Services and recreate

2  -Delete Secure store and recreate

3 - Please verify the following:

        - Secure Store Service Target Application (SSSTA) "YourProjectServerApplication" exists.
        - It has been supplied with credentials.
        - Those credentials have access to the target service application
         - The list of users who are allowed to access the SSSTA contains the current user.

4-  Above step will ensure you have set the credentials on targeted service application

5- Finally, please refer to , similar issue reported

  • Hi, Hopefully the previous advice will have fixed the error. One thing I found when setting up my own Project Server VM is the Execl Services / Reporting being a bit of a pain to troubleshoot. So one issue was fixed by refreshing the report in Excel and saving back to Sharepoint. Here's the detail: An oData report cannot be refreshed within Excel Services. The report needs to be opened in Excel, refreshed and saved back to Sharepoint To refresh your data, open the file in Excel 2013, refresh the data, and then save the file back to the SharePoint document library where it resides. Next time the report is viewed using Excel Services, it will have the most recent data. It still doesn't make sense to me now, but it fixed a "refresh error". Good luck Mark
