SCPM - 1 tape RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

Recently, I installed in my enviroment a SCDPM 2010 for tests. I attached my library on the DPM Server and it's works ok

I only have 1 tape to back up all servers:

    20 GB - File Server

    3 GB- SQL Server

    5 GB - Exchange Server

    System State

I configured DPM to make 1 backup full by week e incremental rest of days. The tape has 400 GB free of space. I also erase the tape and try again but no sucess.

The first day , back up job occurs normally, but other I receive an alert saying that DPM doesn't have a tape free

How can I resolve this problem ? I also want that tape has been overwrite.

    Thanks !

  • You are going to need more than a single tape in order to maintain backups.  Once a tape is marked offsite ready, DPM will not allow you to reuse that tape until all recovery points have been expired, which depends on your retension range.  Please purchase more tapes.

When you say you have a tape library, does it hold more than a single tape, or is it a standalone tape drive ?

Do you have more than one protection group ?

  • Hi Wilson,

Yes, after all of the recovery points expire on the tape, the tape will show as expired, and at that time, it will be available for future backup jobs without you having to do anything.  You can view the tape management report to see when tapes are due back if you take tapes off-site, or you can just "view tape details" for a tape and see when the last recovery point expires so you know when it can be reused.

  • Hi Wilson,

Is it possible that the new PS you added to the group now requires more than one tape to make a recovery point for the group of resources in the PG ?

  • Hi Mike

I enabled co-location as you instructed me.

I 've a library that supports 8 tapes also named Auto-Loader. I've only 4 tapes

Well, I am thinking in use one or two tapes by week. I'm not sure how many PG I will have.Maybe 4.

I configured ratetion range for  1 week. My question is: After the retation range was expired, the DPM will overwrite the tape ?

    Regards,

    Wilson

  • Hi Mike

The DPM is working normally now. But, if I add a new server on existing Protection Group, the backup up does not work. The error message is "There is no tape free on library. "

Doesn't DPM have this flexibility ?

    Regards.

  • if you have added the new server to an existing PG, ideally the backup should happen to an existing Tape. Please check that the tapes available have free space available.

I am closing this thread. please feel free to reopen if problem still persists.

    thanks,
