Detailed tape inventory operation failed on a Dell ML6000 Tape Library RRS feed

  • Question

  • Using DPM2010 when an automatic Inventory is conducted on a Dell ML6000 tape library with 3 x SCSI LTO-3 drives, I get the following error repetativly for each of the tapes currently in use in the Drives.

“Description: Detailed tape inventory failed Operation failed since the slot 48 in library Dell ML6000 Tape Library was empty. This tape is currently present in Drive IBM ULTRIUM-TD3 SCSI Sequential Device (1210289615)”

The Dell ML6000 library revision is 7.5.2.0 (Dell Rev. A08) and the LTO-3’s are FW: 93GM (Dell Rev. A15)

Backups work but the error continues to be reported, anyway to resolve this?

  • On Friday, go under the jobs tab, click on the custom filter link on the right.  Filter on detailed inventory jobs and only the scheduled jibs and select dates for the weekend, then save as future inventories.  You should be able to cancel the scheduled jobs.

  • Hi Steve,

Unfortunatly, these is currently "by design" - althought not a very good design.  There is nothing really wrong or anything you can do to eliminate these except to change the daily inventory start time to a time when no backups would be running. The default start time is 9:00am daily.  To change the start time run this DPM Power shell command.

    set-MaintenanceJobStartTime -dpmservername <dpm_Svr_name> libraryinventory -starttime 1:00PM

  • Thanks for that Mike,   Do you know if there is a way to schedule inventories at different times?  For example our weekend full backup takes over 24 hours to complete, would be nice to say skip an inventory scan when we know the drives will all be in use anyway.

  • I would also like to see this fixed. I normally forget to delete the inventory job and then get the false errors. I could understand if some other process moved the tape from the magazine to the drive, but since DPM made the move it doesn't seem logical to complain.
