Why does IE 11 detect Flash addon only after resetting to default? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My team at work is helping to troubleshoot implementing a new web app that uses Flash. Some users are receiving a message asking to install Flash. However, when we check IE addons it shows that the Shockwave Flash addon is already enabled. We tried adding the site to trusted sites, clearing cache and cookies and restarting the browser. Compatibility does not make a difference either. The only thing that seems to work is resetting all IE settings to default.

    I'm wondering if any one here can explain in detail what changes are being made behind the scenes that allow IE to detect Flash is installed now, when before it could not.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

    Perhaps one of your scripts or a third party script that you use is 'feature' testing for flash support. f12>Debug tab, search4 'new ActiveXObject'. eg. analytics.js

    or(var d=0;d<c.length&&!b;d++){var e=c[d];-1<e.name.indexOf("Shockwave Flash")&&(b=e.description)}if(!b)try{a=new ActiveXObject("ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.7"),b=a.GetVariable("$version")}catch(g){}if(!b)try{a=new ActiveXObject("ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash.6"),b="WIN 6,0,21,0",a.AllowScriptAccess="always",b=a.GetVariable("$version")}catch(g){}if(!b)try{a=new ActiveXObject("ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash"),b=a.GetVariable("$version")}catch(g){}b&&

    Please include a link to problem websites with your questions so we can test them.

    A possible fix might be to run windows update to install the latest updates for IE and Flash.
