DPM - Backup issue with Hyper-V Guest - The Writer experieced a non-transient error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

DPM Server not backing up one of the hyper-v guest. It generates error :

"The Vss application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError: The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur. (0x800423F4)."

    1. Checked the VSS Writer(VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS), All writers are in stable condition. Checked on host and guest too.

    2. Restarted Hyper-V Host.

    Any idea why ?

  • Hi Robert,

    Apology for long delay.

Problem was fixed. As the issue occured, we recently migrated the physical server to Virtual and install hvc on the same server and original server as vhd on top of it.

As everytime, it tried to load Disk and it failed as Virtual hard disk and physical hard disk has same signature.

    Problem resolved.

    Thanks,

  • Hi

If your VSS'es on the host and the guest is in a stable state [1] then the error could be on the guest your backing up, as I understand it the error is connected to a specific guest on a host and not all the guests.

Make a CC on the virtual server. Are you backing up the VHD and also worklads like SQL or Exchange etc within the virtual operatingsystem? If your doing this, make backups on different times.

Verify the event logs on the virtual server when your trying to do the CC, if you get any errors please post them here.
