Backing up 800GB+ of small files word, excel etc. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have greated a new fileserver where i initialy did not have much data and the size of the disk was only configured to 40GB. Now i have extend the disk to 900GB and i have copied 800GB of small files word, excel, pdf types.

Autogrowth was set to enable but did not seem to work so i modifed the disk allocation so that the disk could hold 900GB.

My question is how can it be that only 200mb is transffered in 24 minuts. In this speed it will take forever to get the files backed up.

  • Copying a single large file will take shorter time than copying a large size set of small files. The main reason is that for each file, starting of the file and ending of the file must be read and written from and on the hard drives. Adding this time, will increase the total time for file transfer. In the case of a single large file, one starting point and one ending point, which will take very much less time for read/write.
