what is Breadcrumbing in FIM/MIM? RRS feed

Answers

  • From my experience, the term is used when working with joining objects from multiple datasources with no clear relationship key. The "breadcrumbs" in this case are pieces of information (attribute sets) that help you to identify related objects and perform a join. Breadcrumping is then used to refer to process of exporting these additional pieces of information back to the source system, so that FIM will be able to join the objects next time it imports the data from the source.

  • In short: breadcrumbing means inserting a unique value into different data sources, to make sure the join always works, even in case you need to rebuild your FIM/MIM from scratch (eg after cleaning connector spaces).

If your business data has no unique value readily available, then you can create unique values in FIM/MIM (eg using the MVGuid or a random generated GUID...)

  • This is also referred to in earlier FIM/ILM documentation as a "correlation ID".  See Jef's post on the subject from 2006 here.
