    Working on a project where Gateway configurations are in question.  The question came up as to how Lync determines a gateway port is up or down?

    What protocols are used?

    SIP is the protocol. The gateway must respond to a SIP Options request from Lync. You should see events in the Lync server event logs if the gateway is not responding.
