    We're having a strange error (I hate to say bug) in Word 2010 when trying to create PDFs from some new templates

    When selecting File > Save As and then choosing PDF we get an error that "'Long File Name.pdf' is not a valid short file name.

    Obviously this is true, but not expected. 
    (Incidentally an 8 char name works)

    If we take the same file and select File > Save & Send > Create PDF Document > Create PDF we get what appears to be the same Save As dialog.  This time "long file name.pdf" is accepted as a valid file name and everything is cushty...

    I thought that the two options above were two ways of getting to the same dialog so why does one work and the other not...

    Hi,

    Can you save the same file choose other file format?
    Can you save the file when you type the filename manually?

    Create a new blank document, and save as PDF, type filename manually.

    If the problem does not appears, you may check the template and filename. It would be helpful if you can provide filename or screen short.

    Please test in other Office applications, such as Excel, if Excel cannot save either, please repair Office 2010.

    Thanks for the pointers.  Still no joy.

    * The problem only affects the approx. 12 new templates that form the basis of the new document being worked on.

    * Existing older templates all behave as expected

    * New templates can be saved as other formats with no issue

    * File name is only accepted if < 8 chars from the problem templates.

    * Other Office applications are unnaffected

    * the solutions on the link do not help

    * Changing the location of the templates (e.g. to local template folder) does not change the behaviour.

    To reiterate the issue is with File > Save As > PDF and not with File > Save & Send > Create PDF
