  • Question

  • Environment: Win 10 Enterprise (1703) 64 bit and Office 2010 32 bit. IE 11 is set as default browser via GPO.

We have upgraded our clients to Windows 10 while keeping office 2010 [Due to some business applications].
After upgrade user's cannot open html attachment in email in outlook 2010 the IE 11 browser gives an error: "This Page can't be displayed"

Note: Turn on Enhanced Protected Mode for IE is enabled and this setting has served us well in Windows 7

Any thoughts / guidance on the issue would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

There are settings on the Advanced tab/Security section of Internet Options that determine if Active Content is enabled in local html files or file attachments to run... security updates from MS probably have reset the Advanced tab settings if you don't use GPO profiles. The default setting for html attachments is to map it to the IE Internet zone.

How do you know that the html attachments don't contain malicious code or out of date ActiveX controls?

Uses/web sites can embed hyperlinks to web resources in the email body instead of attachments.

Office 2010 may have settings that restrict the types of attachments and their IE security zone schema that they can open. You should first print a html document to a pdf or xps printer before distributing them as email attachments.

    Regards.

  • Hi Rob,

I am able to fix the issue (Able to open HTML attachments) by disabling Enhanced Protected Mode. The challenge is that our current Security baseline doesn't permits us to disable the Enhanced Protected mode in IE hence this option is not practical for us to implement in production.

I am trying to understand the reason why HTML attachments do not open in Windows 10 with protected mode on while it works in Windows 7 with enhanced protected mode.

Note: IE is managed via GPO and we have 3rd party solutions for securing email and attachments.

Any guidance on the matter will be greatly appreciated.
