SCCM Client Installed, but Not Communicating With Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good Morning -

Out of 800+ hosts, I have about 4-5 workstations with an issue that's frustrating me.  Luckily, one of them is a test machine so I can finally play around with it.

    The Issue

The SCCM 2012 (SP1) client is installed onto a workstation, however the console lists "No" under Client Installed.  Here's what I've tried so far to fix:

    • Re-Installing client by pushing it from SCCM Admin Console (checking all 3 boxes)
    • Re-Installing client by running ccmsetup.exe from UNC path on SCCM server
    • Ensuring Windows Firewall is completely disabled (Even though done so by GP - no 3rd party firewalls installed)
    • Used SCCM Client Center to connect to workstation (everything looks fine) and reset policy & rebuild WMI

    Specs

    • Primary SCCM Server running on Windows 2008 R2
    • SQL DB running on SQL 2008 on Windows 2008 R2 (Separate VM)
    • Workstations with issues are Windows 7 x64

Yes, it's just 4-5 machines - why not just re-image them?   Well, one of them happens to be one of the executives and really would rather not.  We have re-imaged a couple already, but another one pops up about once every month or two.

    Any Ideas?  Thanks!

  • Can you post logs with debug/verbose enabled? I can't tell from the provided logs what's going on.

    From http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/cc988013.aspx:

To enable debug logging after installation, create the following registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CCM\Logging\debuglogging

To enable verbose logging after installation, change the following value to 0:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CCM\Logging\@Global\Loglevel

You might need to change the registry permissions on this key to change these values.

  • Okay.. Does the ClientIDManagerStartup.log indicate the client is registered? ... If you restart SMS agent host and watch locationservices.log does it get mplist.... 1) There is no DNS issue in the client and that client is able to resolve the SCCM server NetBIOS as well as FQDN without any issues. 2) Make sure that the MP link is accessible from the client http://<SCCM_SERVER/SMS_MP/.sms_aut?mplist http://<SCCM_SERVER/SMS_MP/.sms_aut?mpcert If the above test fails make sure that MP is working fine. You can check mpcontrol.log on the server to find the error and make sure that the same works. IIS logs Is the client post and get entries there and successful ie 200 code

All replies

  • What do the client logs show on the affected machine?  i.e. LocationServices, ClientLocation, etc.  From a client perspective does it appear to be working?

  • Thanks for the reply...

Well, I looked through those as well as a few others which had recently been updated.  Below are links to each of those logs.  Nothing stands out at all to me.  In fact, yes, the client seems to be working from it's perspective.

Also - since my original post, I've tried a few more things on the workstation...

    • Ran winmgmt /savalgerepository
    • Tried to run winmgmt /resetrepository, but got error 1 because a dependent services was still running
    • Uninstalled client via SCCM Client center (verified it worked via event logs)
    • Reinstalled via SCCM Admin Console

    Nothing's changed...

    LocationServices.log

    ClientLocation.log

Site code & domain name changed for security

    What do you think?  Thanks!

  • Cant seem to download the logs.  Question for you, if you delete the object from the SCCM Database and then reinstall the client does it work?

  • Good Afternoon - Thanks again for your help -

Here's what I just did  (in order):

    1. Ensured client was not running or installed on workstation
    2. Deleted hostname from sccm admin console
    3. Ran ccmsetup.exe from share on workstation
    4. Waited for ccmsetup.exe to turn to ccmexec.exe - then about 5 more minutes
    5. Refreshed All Systems collection, searched, and couldn't find hostname - waited 10 more minutes
    6. Still no hostname so performed AD computer discovery
    7. Found it, but still No client installed

I compressed all of the log files in Windows\CCM\Logs which had been modified since I started the above and zipped them up (usually prefer rar, but zip obviously more universal.)  Hopefully, you'll be able to get it.  It's just a shared link from my Dropbox.

    Logs.zip

    Thanks Again!

  • I was finally able to download the logs.  We have dropbox blocked via websense so had to get a little creative. ;-)

Anyway, the fact that you don't have a DataTransferService.log is a pretty good indicator that your client is unable to communicate with your MP.  Can you explain your hierarchy and boundaries?

  • Good Morning!

Yeah, know how that it at work.  Luckily, I can add things to the whitelist :)

The logs that I included were only the ones that had been modified since the most recent client install I described above.

I checked in with it this morning and the DataTransferService log had been modified recently.  So... here again is a zip of the log files - including the one you talked about.  I only included the ones that have been modified since the last time I attempted a client install.

    Logs 4-9-13.zip

Again, thank you so much for your time helping!

  • I have the same issue, we have over 16000 clients in our 3-tier SCCM 2007 environment.

All of a sudden, 13000 clients showed "NO" on the console but the client is installed.

I re-created site boundries and MP after that about 10000 clients showed "Yes"(client installed) but I'm struggling to fix about 5000 machines.

I have performed the same exercise on secondary site server but no luck.

ClientLocation.log shows "Current Management point is XXX-XXX-XXXXX.domain.

    ClientIDManagerStartuo.log shows "Client is registered"

All looks well on both client and server side but the problem still persist..

    Please advise..
