why sql server used in SCCM 2012 secondary server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I really wondered why we need the sql server on secondary server as it not hosting the DB still its doing the same job as it still a Gateway server for client communication and policy.

  • Unlike ConfigMgr 2007, ConfigMgr 2012 uses SQL server replication as one way of communication between primary and secondary sites.

  • Secondary sites in CM12 do need at least SQL express, because they receive a subset of global data. That's by design.

  • Thank you Eirik and Torsten

    I just read this ,

ConfigMgr 2012 now utilizes SQL replication instead of of file replication(in 2007) in most instances, an instance of SQL Server is required so that it can continue to report to the parent primary site.  Having SQL Server on the Secondary site also create an impact on  the supported number of clients for the server.
