Do I need Windows Terminal Services for QuickBooks? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone,

I have a need to run 40 instances of QuickBooks and I have a powerful dual XEON, 48GB RAM server at my disposal. I have the option to install Windows 2003 server or 2008 server. I need some advise as to how to approach this.

    Here is what I need:

A- Up to 40 users concurrently connecting to Windows (maybe through Remote Desktop or other methodes)

B- I can arrange for VPN connection for all users.

C- All users will be using various different versions of Windows from all over the world

D- Every user will be able to login to their own Login on Windows and use QuickBooks within their own Login. I will have 40 QuickBooks licenses.

*So, it's important to be able to install 40 QuickBooks into each account so they have their own instance. I am not sure if QuickBooks has a version that allows multiple users to lunch the application at the same time or not but even that would work for me.

    Looking forward to your feedback.

***I am open to anything else like VNC or similar technologies if that proves to work for what I need rather than Terminal Services.

I would also like to know how easy the process of installing CAL client is and if it's required to be installed on user PC or would it install on Windows Server?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

I believe you asked somewhat the same question here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/a2c567e6-696f-4fe8-960e-25edebe984ee
Where we discussed that the enterprise edition of Quickbooks supports Terminal Server environments. So that would answer question A.
    About the other questions:

    B. I Would suggest to use Remote Desktop Gateway for this. This allows users to connect in a secure way over port 443 (SSL) in stead of plain RDP over port 3389.
    See this guide: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5177

    C. Different versions of Windows will work, but the latest RDP client version is always advised. (at least 6.1)

    D. As discussed in the other thread, that will work.

As discussed the Quickbooks enterprise editions seems to support this.

For RDS (TS) you will need a CAL (either per user of per device). For this to work you need to setup a license server and buy and configure the CAL on the licenseserver.
