Explain DPM file restore process

    Question

  • Hello, Stephane explained in detail the DPM backup process to Online Recovery points.  If possible, can he give a detailed explanation of how a file restore from an Online Restore point works?  I'm trying to do a restore from an Online Restore point, but keep getting an error - "The recovery destination selected for one or more files to be recovered is invalid. (ID 100070)".  My CBEnginecurr.errlog file has this entry - "Failed: Hr: = [0x8078002e] SetupReplicationForReplica unsuccessful for replica id", and - "Ds Id (52778327430817) failed. DLS: 1073841894 HRESULT: 0x8078002e".  I can only restore from my local disk (short term storage).

  • Hi!

Can you provide a screenshot of this error?

Have you also made sure that your Staging Folder is NTFS formated and has enough capacity?

    1. Open the DPM Administration console.
    2. Go to Management
    3. Click on Online.
    4. Click on Configure.
    5. Go to the Recovery Folder settings step to configure your Recovery Folder.

    Kind regards,
    Leon

  • Hi,

Can you provide a screenshot of this error?

Also did you check that you have the disk where the Recovery Folder is at as NTFS? And also that it has enough free disk space?

    Kind regards,
    Leon

  • I just checked the file system on the drive holding the Scratch folder & noticed it is ReFS.  I'll create another disk as NTFS, move Scratch folder & try restore again.

  • Thank you, the issue was the Scratch folder not existing on an NTFS drive.  Just have one more question.  When restoring all the contents from a particular online recovery point, is the restored information composed of:

    • The initial online replica
    • All the changed files from all the online recovery points before, & up to, the restore point date selected

  • The recovery points works just as on-premises.

Whether you are protecting file data or application data, protection begins with the creation of the replica of the data source.

The replica is synchronized, or updated, at regular intervals according to the settings that you configure

Let's say you have a online replica created 1st of May 2018 and another one 10th of May 2018.
DPM will have synchronized the changes from the replica of 1st of May to the new replica 10th of May, so this means you will have the old data + changes in the newest replica.

    Kind regards,
    Leon
