DPM Server OS - Upgrade or clean Install ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are having SCDPM 2019 running on Windows Server 2016. It was SCDPM 2016 we upgraded to 2019 some time back. Now regarding OS upgrade to Windows Server 2019 from 2016. Looking for best practices.

    1. In-place upgrade ?

    2. Or Clean install of WS 2019 and restore DPMDB via DPMsync ?

    3. In case of fresh install, do I need to uninstall DPM from Old OS first or can I directly format OS drive with WIndows Server  2019 and then restore DPMDB ?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

The best practice is to clean install, while in-place upgrades are supported it is not the recommended approach.

Personally I would perform a clean install on Windows Server 2019, and restore the DPM database

If you perform a clean install, back up the DPM database to another location, you can then shut down/uninstall the DPM server, reset/delete the computer object in Active Directory, then install the new Windows Server 2019 and restore the DPM database.

    Best regards,
    Leon
