MDT 2013: Windows 7 with Windows Updates fails to capture RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've build a MDT 2013 setup with two shares. One for Reference Image building, the other for Production.
The Reference Image is build inside a Hyper-V VM with enough drive space and 4GB RAM.

My issue is with capturing a Reference Image in which I use a Task Sequence to install Windows 7 Enterprise /w SP1, a bunch of software, and Windows Updates.
It immediately crashes with a Create WIM error. Oddly enough, it runs fine if I don't do Windows Updates in the Task Sequence.

But when I let the Task Sequence only run the installation, and don't let it Sysprep or Capture, and inside the installation run the LiteTouch.vbs (from the MDT share) and select a separate Capture Task Sequence, it will capture fine.

The last part is made using the following blog post.

I hope someone can give me an idea where things might go wrong.
Doing a two step build works, but isn't really automated...

  • hello,

can you share the full log file ?

when you do the 2 steps part, do you do anything between the os install and the os capture task sequence (reboot ?)

  • Post the logs to something like Onedrive.  If you are unsure where to find them or which one note the link in my signature.

Most important details are logs. If you are unsure how to post logs or where to find them then reference https://keithga.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/video-mdt-2013-log-files-basics-bdd-log-and-smsts-log/

  • I don't have a log, because several sites mentioned that might be part of the problem.
Can try to do another run with logs enabled of course.

When I do the two step run, I do nothing between the two steps.
Just the last option in the TS to do a full run except sysprep and capture, then a litetouch.vbs from within that installation.

When I have another run, I will upload the logs using OneDrive.
Need to adjust the TS a little bit to safe some time. Take out the .NET Framework 4.5.2 installation (comes with WSUS) and include IE 10 so it doesn't update IE8 first (post-WSUS) and then install IE10 using WSUS...

  • In the case of a capture failure your DISM log will be on the temporary ramdrive.  You would have to copy the DISM log off from WinPE before you reboot/restart/shutdown.

  • Sorry for the late reply. I've been very, very busy and had a week off due to a course as well.

I will create a new reference image probably this week again, and will let the logging run along too.
