Internet Explorer 11 Installation Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have recently installed IE11 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine using Windows update. Since installing this, Windows update is still prompting me to install this. If I attempt to go ahead with the installation, I am getting error 9C48. The version installed is 11.0.9600.16428.

I've seen various threads online with similar problems, but nothing has fixed this yet.

I have not been able to uninstall it as it is not showing on the installed programs list, nor is it showing as an installed update.

If I try and install it using the offline installer, an error tells me it can't proceed because of a newer version installed.

I also found a copy here: support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/17621/internet-explorer-downloads This appears to install fine, but when checking with Windows update, it was still prompting me to update and the same error occurred.

I've included a copy of the IE11_main log from C:\Windows below:

  • I've managed to resolve this by doing the following:

    1.  Run the following from cmd as an administrator: FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart" (when I did this previously, the command didn't run correctly).
    2.  After completion, restart the computer. Ignore any errors about missing files at startup.
    3.  Check for updates with Windows update. Install any as required. Repeat as required.
    4.  Run IE11 offline installer and restart when prompted.
    5.  Run Windows update and install any other applicable updates.

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

  • Windows update is still prompting me to install this.

That means it is finding at least one module in the File Information list for that update which has not been updated.  If we still had WindowsUpdate.log you could use its verbose logging to find out what the module is.  Oh good.  You aren't using W10.  Then you can use WU's Verbose logging and get the necessary clues from your WindowsUpdate.log.  Otherwise you can uninstall the update and then try it again normally.

  • Hi swalker32,

According to the log you provided, Setup exit code: 0x00009C48 (40008) - A more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed. It could be caused with Windows Update’s cache files, we could check the Windows Update log about the fail error and module.

Meanwhile we could check the link below to follow the steps.

Hope it will be helpful to you

  • Thank you for your help. I enabled the verbose logging, but it was generating about 1MB of log data per second! I switched back to normal logging; the below shows the results of the checking of the updates and installation from WindowsUpdate.log. I couldn't see anything of any use from this. Any thoughts?

  • The log shows you are doing a manual install of an update which is already present.  Then you are told it wasn't necessary but if it was it would require manual intervention to proceed anyway.  Why not uninstall IE11 and start over?

  • I'm assuming you're referring to the first log I have uploaded. After the initial issue with Windows update trying to install it and failing, I attempted a manual install which failed with that error.

The second log from WindowsUpdate.log shows the update attempt using the wuapp tool.

Unfortuanately I cannot see IE11 in the list of installed programmes or updates, so can't remove it. I also found a command to run from the cmd window, but this didn't do anything...

IE is a component of the OS, so it would not be listed under "Installed Programs or Updates".  If IE11 was added to your OS as an update it would appear under updates to Microsoft Windows.  If so, uninstall it there.  Another possibility, which I don't think happens with your OS, is that if IE11 had been installed previous to an OS service pack, then that would be the level of browsing functionality seen in your new OS level.  In that case a way to uninstall IE would be to first uninstall the service pack, in order to get back to a state where you can see IE11 as an update for the previous OS level, and then uninstall that update.  That would take you back to IE10 or whatever level of browsing functionality existed in the OS before that service pack was seen.

    FYI

  • Hi Robert, Sorry, what I meant was that I also couldn't see it installed as an O/S update and it definitely wasn't installed along with service pack. IE was installed via Windows Update. It sounds like the application has been installed, but Windows Update isn't aware of its existence.

Is there any way to manually remove IE so that I can re-install it or tell Windows Update that IE is already installed?

  • Is there any way to manually remove IE

In a server you typically don't want a browser so normally it may appear unchecked in Windows Features.  However, all that is usually supposed to do is hide the iexplore.exe stub program and its shortcuts.  And that is simply an external UI mechanism for supporting a DISM command or its PowerShell equivalent.  So, if you don't see it in Windows Features (presumably unchecked) see what you get from this PowerShell pipeline:

Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online | where FeatureName -match "Explorer" | fl *

I think the State information should be enough of a clue (in which case the Format-List stage is redundant) but here is the actual DISM command syntax in case there is more that way (assuming your FeatureName is the same as mine, otherwise that is just a placeholder for what the PowerShell gives you)

    DISM /Online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:"Internet-Explorer-Optional-amd64"

Last time I checked (for W8.1) there is no initialization (of all browser functionality) done when iexplore.exe is hidden or reshown (unfortunately--I regard it as a lost opportunity for doing a repair).

BTW you told us that the OS was "R2" so I suspect that whatever did that is what you would have to undo to get the equivalent effect of removing a service pack.
