"Location is not available" Error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi! :)

I encountered the following error when I downloaded some Windows updates and then restarted the laptop (The desktop was black and empty, and the UI of the Start bar is something like Windows classic):

    "Location is not available

C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location."

The updates that I downloaded are as follows:

    1. Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3000061)
    2. Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2968294)
    3. Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2972100)
    4. Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2952664)

I restarted the laptop, and everything is okay again. I just want to know if there is anything wrong with my laptop and if there's anything I can do to prevent the error again because it's quite scary.

    Thanks in advance! :)

    Regards,

    Grace :)

  • Hello there Grace,

I am not sure if this issue will happen again, but in case it happens, you should get as much details as possible, below i put some steps you should try, just in case. If the system is ok now, carry on, and if happen again, no worries post your question and in the community you'll find someone willing to help.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista:

If the issue persists, I suggest you create a new user account to test it.

    Create a user account

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-8

If it works in a new user account ,you need to fix the corrupt user profile.

Copy the previous user profile into the new one, you can refer to the steps on this link:

User profile service failed and Server Execution failed :

  • Hi,

Since the message disappear, it's hard to make troubleshooting. Maybe Event Log would record this events, please check it. And if that's the case, please post the contents of this event log here.

  • Hi! :)

Sorry for the very late reply. I couldn't find the logs, so I couldn't reply. >_< But it happened again this morning, so I was able to get the logs easier. There were a lot of errors, so I just saved them all. Please check the log files here: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=1285527DC975EB6F%21105

    Thank you very much! :)
