  • Question

  • Hi

MS Project server has options to connect with reporting tools like Power BI. Can MS Project Professional be connected to any similar reporting tools without linking with MS Project Server?

    Thanks,

    Roshni.

  • Hello,

Unfortunately not, you will need to get the data out of the project files (mpp files) and into a data source that tools like Power BI can access such as SQL. The Project client does have the ability to create visual reports in Excel / Visio and also custom reports within the Project client for the open project file.

  • Thanks for the reply @Paul Mather.

Can we extract data from mpp files directly into SQL without the Project server (OData)

    Thanks,

    Roshni.

  • You would need to develop a process that could read the MPP files in a folder then push the data into the other data source that Power BI etc. can read. Or you could develop an add-in for the Project client, that on the save event of the mpp file custom code was triggered and using the Project object mode,l took the data required and pushed it elsewhere. Project Server / Project Online is the easier solution.
