Move moss databases to new server RRS feed

Answers

  • I have moved my databases to new sql server with a different name and used the method outlined here

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725(office.12).aspx

Went pretty smoothly. Now I need to remove my old sql server from the domain, it is no longer needed. The problem is I had to create an alais on the old sql server to point to the new one. If I take down the old sql server I cannot access Sharepoint site. How does one remove the need for the alais and have sharepoint use the new sql server only?

I see in Central Admin site under Operations | Servers in Farm, both sql servers. Can I remove the old sql server and sharepoint will use the new server Or do I need to use the Technology Configuration Wizard to modify the farm settings? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Hi Mark,

I have read the article you mentioned above, and I think these are sufficiently detailed to guide you to complete this task. I still want to emphasize is that you must make a backup of your database so that you can restore your data if there are any difficult issues in the migration process.

Here is a blog which have provided some useful tips: http://pointofshare.blogspot.com/2009/08/moving-sharepoint-database-to-another.html.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Peng Lei

  • Hi BlueSky,

I decided to wait and perform the migration in a test environment. We have recently moved sharepoint from a hardware to vm. I still have the servers for the WFE and SQL server. I am going to setup another sql server and test it before I perform it on the production. Hopefully by this weekend. I will update.

  • Proposing Peng Lei as the answer is premature at this point in my opinion. I have not completed the move yet and and I wanted to give the exact method that I have used. I appreciate Peng Lei's advice it does help me to move in the right direction. However I do not beleive my question has been answered. If the moderator wishes to mark it as answered again I will except that but I will still post my exact method for others.

  • Everything starting with "Now I need to remove" is a new question.

Please post it as a new thread with a new title.

I'm now marking a post here as the answer and locking the thread. Clearly the question in your first post in this thread has been answered.
