Shutting down exchange 2003 server because we migrated to a cloud solution… RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We’ve migrated over to a hosted exchange server and I want to simply stop the (in house) exchange services BUT I don’t want to totally remove the server.  I occasionally get asked – by management – to retrieve old emails – from people that are no longer here and were not here during the migration.

My question is…can I simply stop the services for the exchange 2003 server and restart when I need to retrieve old emails?

NOTE:  the exchange 2003 server is running on one of the domain controllers.

    Thanks,

    dlt

  • Hi,

because your Exchange Server is running on a domain controller please do not shut down because your Active Directory will be shut down too. So please be careful and analyze your Active Directory infrastructure before shutting down the Exchange Server.

How many users have had their mailbox on your Exchangeserver. Perhaps it is possible to export each mailbox to a pst-file in order to get access to the old mailbox data.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Thomas,

I wouldn't be shutting down the server itself, just the exchange services.  I'm assuming that's what you may be referring to when you say 'do not shut down because your Active Directory will be shut down too.'?

    Thanks,

    dlt
