Document Conversions Load Balancer Service Fails After Installing MS14-022 Patches RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a MOSS 2007 (x64) Server, used by a developer, which was working fine until I installed the MS14-022 patches (dlc2007-kb2596763-fullfile-x64-glb.exe, dlcapp2007-kb2596902-fullfile-x64-glb.exe and sts2007-kb2837616-fullfile-x64-glb.exe) yesterday.  The patches installed fine, but when I ran the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard afterward, it failed while registering services, specifically the "Document Conversions Load Balancer Service".  The error was "The operation is not valid due to the current state of the object."  I tried stopping this service, in Services on Server in Central Administration, and starting it again, but I get the same error about the current state of the object.  I have tried some commands to provision the service, found in various forums, but the same error is thrown.  I cannot remove the patches, since they cannot be uninstalled.  Any ideas on how I can resolve this?

The server has Windows 2003 x64 Standard Edition with MOSS 2007 SP3 with the June 2013 Cumulative Update and October 2013 security patches (wssloc2007-kb2596741-fullfile-x64-glb.exe and xlssrvapp2007-kb2827327-fullfile-x64-glb.exe).

  • I opened a case with Microsoft PSS after posting this.  Today, they determined that the reason the Document Conversion services were not restarting was that the keys referenced in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2910363 were not present.  Once we created these, the services were able to be started, and the wizard was able to complete successfully.  Not sure why the missing keys were not an issue previously.  My hypothesis is that the patches mentioned in my original post introduced the need for them.

  • Hi James,

When you run SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard failed, is there any error log with more information?

Is there any restart prompt after you installed this MS14-022 patch on your SharePonint?

Have you tried running the configuration Wizard with SharePoint Farm Account logged on your SharePoint server?

    Thanks,

    Daniel Yang

  • When I run the wizard, it does create a PSCDiagnostics... log which it links to.  I don't see anything interesting in there, but I would post it here, but .  Unfortunately, it is too large.  I did not see any restart prompt.  I have restarted the box a few times since installing, and this has not helped anything (when in doubt, reboot).  I ran the wizard with the account used to install SharePoint and apply every other SharePoint update previously.  It is a Farm Administrator, Domain Admin, etc.

I ran the wizard again today, so I could locate the log again.  Here is the portion of the log where things go bad:

  • Hi James,

Please try using command to run wizard again, see if it helps.

psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -force

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263413(v=office.12)

And here is another similar post with modifying web.config file, you can take a look.

  • Running the wizard using the command you suggest succeeds, but it does not fix the broken "Document Conversions Load Balancer Service", nor does it allowed running the wizard normally to succeed afterwards.  With regard to modifying web.config, which web.config do you propose I modify?  If I were having a problem with a particular web application, this would be straightforward, but I'm not sure which one would apply here.
