Yes,you could not install AD DS on Windows server 2008 r2 web edition.
Also you can check detailed informations about 2008 r2 editions

Hi,
As Burak Uğur mentioned. We could not have ad on windows server 2008r2 web edition.
It is not supported. You could refer to the following article, it only support DNS server and IIS, that is why you just see the DNS server and IIS in the list.

Hi
>when i go to the server manager and "add roles...." what is the server OS?2008 or 2012?Did you install AD before(mean create domain)
If you install domain before,you could able to Access Active Directoru Users and Computers on server manager->tools menü (2012)
2008 click start->Administrative tools
if you need to create domain;
for 2008
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754438(v=ws.10).aspx
for 2012

it is 2008 R2
Active directories not in the "Administrative tools".
The instruction you refer to at
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754438(v=ws.10).aspx
assumes that I have active directories, but I do not have them. And I cannot add them because when I go to the "Add Roles" in the server manager I do not see them in the list.
What should I do?- Edited by Viktorka Thursday, June 4, 2015 4:27 PM highlighted important

>assumes that i have active directories...if you installed domain already,Active Directory USers and Computers managemnt console automaticly add on administrative tools,
this server is a DC?or just a member server?

It is just a server. So far we were using it as a web server. I have feeling that during the installation not all features were installed. I have installation CD but I am not sure whether it could be used without reinstalling the system.

Hi
Active Directory Domain Service role just Works on DC,so your server is web server.There isn't AD users and computers console on your server.
İF you need to install a AD DS on server 2008 r2,follow the steps on this article;
But please make sure you really need to configure AD DS role on web server??,
And if you have a domain,i mean have DCs already,you are able to connect Active Directory by using RSAT,
you can install RSAT on your computer and connect AD from your computer

when I run dcpromo I am getting the message "The active directory domain services installation wizard is not supported on this SKU".
Followed your second reference bu the link to download the "Remote Server Administration Tool does not work". Found it at
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=7887
will tried to install got message "the update is not applicable to your computer
I guess everything goes back to the beginning. To install and set I need DC. To install DC I need Active directory role added but I do not have it in the list of available roles.
Is there a is there SP or other download which could be used?
