VM live migration planned for "workgroup based" Failover Cluster? RRS feed

  • Question

  • After I (finally managed to get my non-domain-joined / workgroup only based cluster working (2 hyper-V Technical Preview 4 nodes), I was wondering whether there are any plans to enable live migration in such an environment?

By the way/off-topic: Nice idea to lift the domain requirement for clusters, in particular for home / lab situations. It even runs nested on ESXi...

  • Besterino,

At this point in time, the use of virtual machines on a workgroup / cross-domain Cluster is limited.  A workgroup / cross-domain Cluster does not make use of a Cluster Name Object (CNO) in Active Directory.  Without an Active Directory object, Kerberos cannot be used.  Live Migration needs Kerberos in order to work.  So in this configuration, quick migration is going to be the only option at this point in time.

I'm afraid I could not find any official document about it.

We could wait for the official announcements and later updates.

  • OK thank you. I'd expect I am not the only one interested in that.

In the meantime, I get quite regular (once a minute at least) the following error:

"Failed to register cluster name in the local user groups: Incorrect function. (0x80070001). Hyper-V will retry the operation."

I suppose it is related to not being part of a domain and not being able to modify the DNS, but how to get it solved?
