  • How do you add view only permissions to the Sharepoint site for a Office 365 group? I went under the site permissions for the SharePoint site and added users under the visitors tab, but they were not able to see the site. I have checked under Exchange Admin center and 365 admin center but do not see anywhere where you set permission levels.

  • The problem is that Office groups are created when you create a Security Group in Office 365. By default that security group is added to the built-in Members group of the Site Collection.  To make sure that you don’t inadvertently lock users out of the site Microsoft disables your ability to change the permission on the default Administrative groups when using an Office Group based site.

    But there is still a way to modify the permissions for the users in the groups.  If you navigate to the home page of the site and select Site Permissions from the Settings menu (the gear) you will see a panel open on the right hand side of the browser window.  Under Site Members you will see the security group that provides the basis for the Office group you created. If you select Edit under that group you can change the permissions for the members of the group to either Read or Full Control. However, instead of changing the permission level for the group it will actually move the security group to either the Site Visitors or Site Owners groups respectively.

  • Hi DonT22,

    There is no default permission assigned to an Office 365 group when it is created. To grant read only permission to an Office 365 group to a SharePoint site, we just need to add the group to the Site Permissions page.

    A few things you should notice:

    1. If it is a new created Office 365 group, it might take a while (one hour) for the new Office 365 group to become usable.

    2. When you grant read only permission to the Office 365 group in a SharePoint site, only the group members will have access to the site. If the group owner is not a member of the group, he/she will get access denied when entering the site.

    To make sure the group has passed the site permissions to users, you can check user permissions via Site Permissions page > Check Permissions.

    In addition, you can check the group memberships via Azure Active Directory admin center (https://aad.portal.azure.com/) > All services > Groups. Once you can see the membership updated on this page, the site permission should become available to it.
