Protection of Exchange 2010 fails - DMPRA service terminates RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Recently setup MS DPM2010 to setup our network.  Using it to protect our Exchange 2010, which worked fine to start with.

Recently the backups have failed with the error "The agent on <server> is unreachable".

Looking on the server in question, I can see that the service is terminating and logging the below in the System event viewer log:

The DPMRA service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 319 time(s).

When this started, I updated DPM with Rollup 7, so the version number is 3.0.8195.0.

Exchange is running on SP1 and the version number is 14.1.218.15.

Seen some posts claiming installing a rollup on Exchange fixed it and others talking about a lack of memory.

Is there any further logging or help anybody can provide me with ?

    thanks

    John H

  • Hi John,

Could you search the DPMRA logs on the protected server and the MSDPMCurr.errlog on the DPM server for communication issues:

    • Client Side Activity %Program Files%\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Temp
    • DPM Server Activity %Program Files%\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Temp

You could also check connectivity :

    # From protected server to the DPM server
    ping <protected server name>  <---succeed or fail
net view \\<protected server name>  <---succeed or fail
Sc \\<protected server name> query  <---succeed or fail
Wmic /node:"<protected server name>" OS list brief   <---succeed or fail

    # From the DPM server to the protected server
    ping <protected server name> <---succeed or fail
net view \\<protected server name> <---succeed or fail
Sc \\<protected server name> query <---succeed or fail
Wmic /node:"<protected server name>" OS list brief <---succeed or fail

  • Hi Stephane,

    Thanks for your reply.

The client side logs has the following in it at just before the service dies:

The Server log at the same time just throws the error:

    BackupMachine : FAILURE - BACKUP, errorCode=RmAgentNotResponding

    # From protected server to the DPM server
    ping <protected server name>  <---succeed
net view \\<protected server name>  <--- returned 'There are no entries in the list'

    # From the DPM server to the protected server

    Sc \\<protected server name> query <---Command would not run (Server 2008 R2)
Wmic /node:"<protected server name>" OS list brief <---succeed

    Thanks again,

  • Hi Jhanby

Are you able to update your Exchange version to SP2 and to the latest rollup?

I am running an exchange 2010 DAG and have seen this when i was on SP1. SP2 seems to resolve the problem.
