  • Hello,

Please check if there are checkpoints, ISO files or orphaned resources associated with this VM. If so, please just remove them, and then try to perform the live migration again.

    Best regards,

    Andy Liu

  • Hi Andy,

I can confirm this issue. Since we rolled out VMM 1801, a Live Migration of specific virtual machines isn't possible anymore. All attempts to migrate fail with a critical exception being generated. The report is almost identical to the one in the initial post.

For sure, it's not related to checkpoints, mounted ISO files or  orphaned library resources. I've checked for all of it but no joy. Also, it's not related to to the authentication type used for Live Migration. Fails with both CredSSP and Kerberos. No relation to the guest OS. Fails for some virtual machines running Server 2008 R2, 2012 R2 or 2016 while other virtual machines running the same OS can be migrated properly. I didn't find any similarities with the affected virtual machines yet. Since the affected virtual machines migrated properly with SCVMM 2016 UR4, I assume it's not related to the virtual machine configuration.

    Any support appreciated!

  • We have the same problem at migration from a cluster on a cluster

  • Hello, we have the same issue!

After installing the May 2018 Updates to out Hyper-V 2012 R2 Hosts, we are not able to migrate VMs.

Always showing the same error message listed above. Our VM Config Version is still Version 5.0 Generation 1

  • Hi Sven,

    three questions:

which patch level the servers had before you updated them? Did you also update the machine where VMM is running on? And which authentication type did you set for Live Migration in VMM (CredSSP / Kerberos)?

    BR,

    Markus

  • Hey Markus,

    - the patch level could be December 2016 on the Hyper-V Hosts.

    - yes, I've updated the VMM Server too

    - i tried both of the authentication types (CredSSP and Kerberos)

    best regards

    Sven

  • Hi Sven,

then at least it has nothing to do with the changes related to

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4093492/credssp-updates-for-cve-2018-0886-march-13-2018

We met some issues with Live Migration related to CredSSP which came into my mind and could have been the reason for you too. But seems to be another root cause since it also fails with Kerberos.

    BR,

    Markus

  • Hi,

the reason i've updated, VMM could not manage any of our Hyper-V Hosts because of the March/May updates installed on the VMM Server but not on the Hyper-V Hosts.

But now no migration could be done.

Whats next to check or to do?

    BR,

    Sven

  • I tested a live migration between two Hyper-V 2016 Serve with a VM with Config Version 5.0

    that works without problems

  • I solved the problem, after i removed and readded the Hyper-V Host from VMM!

Now i can live migrate the VMs
