Clients not communicating with Fallback Status Point during client push RRS feed

  • Question

  • I’m working on a new SCCM 2012 SP1 rollout on new Server 2012 boxes.  Site server, MP, SQL, and one DP are all on same box.  FSP is on a dedicated box.   I’m doing by best to stringently following guides and documents for this deployment but I'm missing something.

During each client push I am receiving a Request failed: 500 Internal Server Error in the ccmsetup.log file.  Once at the beginning and once at the end.  A snippet from the end is posted below.

The client installs successfully and checks in fine, and the logs seem clean for all the site role installations.  No warnings or critical errors in the site status or component status nodes.  Everything appears to be working normally, but it’s like the clients just can’t talk to the FSP.

I don’t believe this is a firewall issue as I’ve opened all ports specified in the MS documentation.  I’ve also attempted the push with the firewall disabled on the site server, FSP, and client.  It’s the same each time.

The fspisapi.log file doesn’t even exist.  And trying to visit http://server.domain.com/SMS_FSP/.sms_fsp results in a 403 forbidden error.

I’m thinking this has something to do with permissions and IIS, but I’m not extremely familiar with IIS and SCCM documentation is limited to basically which components to install (which I’ve done).

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Problem solved.  Once again lacking Microsoft documentation cost me days of work.

    Solution: Install BITS feature

This was NOT included in the documentation here (but it does specify the BITS prerequisite for a MP):

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx#BKMK_Win2k12SiteSystemPrereqs

The documentation says "default IIS configuration" with added Metabase compatibility.   Well that alone does not work.  You have to install BITS on Server 2012 Standard as well.  (Or it may be possible to add the IIS features separately that are installed with BITS).

  • Just examine the installation logfile of the FPS if it was installed successfully at all. You can also remove and re-add the FSP role.

  • The log files for the FSP installation are all good.  No problem indicators at all.  Actually there are no indicators anywhere that the FSP isn't working properly, only the 500 error in the client push log file (and absence of report data of course).

I removed and re-added the role.  Unfortunately that didn't resolve the issue - same 500 error message when I pushed the client.

Next step is to delete that server from SCCM altogether and build a new physical server, on a separate vlan and see if by some miracle that resolves it.

I'm surprised no one else has seen this since I'm following all the documentation exactly.  Guess that's the price for going all 2012 products.

  • I've removed the FSP role, removed the FSP site system, and then installed the FSP on a different 2012 box on the same subnet as the clients.  Still getting the 500 Internal Server Error mentioned above when pushing clients.

There are no other errors in the installation logs that I see.  It looks like everything installs just fine, but the clients just can't talk to the FSP (or maybe the Management Point can't talk to the FSP?)  Been looking for days and I can't find much information on this error at all in this context.

Anyone got any ideas before I contact MS Tech Support?

  • The client push installation properties read: SMSSITECODE=WT1 FSP=server.domain.edu

Right now I'm trying to install all IIS components in case the 2012 SP1 documentation is missing something.

  • Here's the W3SVC1 log files from the FSP.  So it looks like the clients are attempting to talk to the FSP.
