Replication Compatibility with Sqlserver 2016

    Question

  • Can we configure replication  as Publisher SqlServer 2008 ,Distributor 2008 and subscriber 2016.

According to MSDN : Publisher is within 2 builds of the Subscriber and the Distributor is same or higher build then Publisher’.

  • This type of a topology is not supported.

You can configure your subscriber server via script for such a topology, but not through the wizard.

It is not advisable to do this as a future service pack might break such a topology.

Distributor version should always be equal to or greater than the publisher version and a publisher has to be less than or equal to the Distributor version.

Subscriber has to be within two versions of the Publisher version, for example, if your publisher is 2016 so your subscriber could either be 2014 or 2012 but not 2008 R2, hence your approach would not be supported.

    Hope this helps.

  • Mohsin's excellent point answers the question about the versions between the publisher and the distributor. This is enforced in the replication stored procedures.

However, the (publisher/distributor does) not need to be within 2 versions for a subscriber.  Please try it out for yourself.

But you will not get any support from Microsoft with such a topology and such a topology will be vulnerable to a change in a service pack.
