Hardware Requirements for Server 2012 R2

  • I am tasked with purchasing a new server for the business and need to know where to potentially start on a baseline with.

It will be running Active Directory for around 45 users & up to 60 devices
It will be housing file storage for each user (Max 30 - 40GB each)
The server will be running Sage 50 so SQL is going to be present
It will require the ability to allow at least 2 users to connect via RDP at any one time

I am aware that I will require 2 DC servers to allow AD to run efficiently so any advice on the requirements for these would also be appreciated.

    Many thanks!

  • Since you also need Sage and SQL server and definitely would not want that on a DC, I'd suggest installing hyper-v role on host and stand up guests for Active directory domain services and other guests for applications. As to sizing hardware; the server manufacturer's have trained personnel that can help you with that task.

  • Hi,

I would agree with Dave's suggestion and also you can follow MS link for some guidance on the system requirements.

Will suggest you implement 2 DC's with AD /DNS and other applications such as SQL/Sage on another standard Server.

For RDP you will require license if you want more than 2 users connecting.

File Storage server must be on a server that is not DC, so you can spec accordingly and it is advisable not to use DC for File Storage.
