Office Document Cache Handler Add-on RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I wasn't able to find if Office Document Cache Handler is a best practice with SharePoint Server 2016.

Our organization is using IE11 with Windows 10 and the Add-on is not distributed and missing from the IE-Add-ons.

I have read some arguing that with the Add-on enabled there maybe performance and security concerns.

Any info, advice, suggestions is more than welcome!

    Thanx in advance!

    Ioannis

  • Hi,

Microsoft Office Upload Center now gives you a way to see the state of files you're uploading to a server, in one location.

This is helpful in the following situations:

    1. You have opened a file from a server, and the server goes offline. You can save the file, knowing that it will be uploaded when the server goes back online.

    2. You've been working on files in an airport hotspot, and are about to board your flight. By checking the status in the Upload Center, you will be able to tell when the upload has completed and you can disconnect to board the plane.

    3. An error occurs during the upload. You are alerted immediately, so that you can fix the problem and resume the upload quickly.

More information about Microsoft Office Upload Center: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Microsoft-Office-Upload-Center-f08161d9-ab64-4486-af69-7cd30b34df71?CorrelationId=625c801a-7238-416d-a3e4-99b514f903c7&ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US&ocmsassetID=HA010388348

If you disable this add-on, it would take longer to open documents downloaded from SharePoint.

If this feature is useful to you, I suggest you enable Office Document Cache Handler.

If this feature is little use, you don’t need to enable this add-on.

From MS side, no fact shows that it will cause performance and security issues.

    Thanks,

    Dean Wang

  • Hello Dean,

thank you very much for reply.

Do you know if the Add-On in IE11 is only with Office 2013 available?

Colleagues with Office 2013 installed have the add-on (version 15.xxx.xxx), but the colleagues with Office 2016 do not even see the Add-on available.

I have checked also and Office Document Cache Handler does not appear as possible feature in the Options of the Installation of Office 2016.

Is it possible that Office Document Handler is with Office 2016 deprecated?

    Thanx in advance!

  • Hi,

To narrow down this issue, can you check for the difference version of OS between “Office 2013 + IE 11” environment and  “Office 2016 + IE 11” environment?

If OS versions are different, you can try to test in two environment with same OS versions without any Office 2013 or Office 2016.

These test steps can check whether this issue is caused by OS.

Feel freely to reply if there is any update.

    Thanks,

    Dean Wang
