Unusual Collation "Compatibility_51_409_30001"

    Question

  • Hi

We are preparing a database migration from SQL 2008 to SQL 2014 and noticed that one of the databases we are wanting to migrate has an unusual collation in sys.databases - Collation "Compatibility_51_409_30001".

When right clicking the database in SSMS and going to Properties>Options the collation in blank.

We cannot find any information on this collation and it is not listed in "select * from fn_helpCollations()"

Can anyone shed any light on this mystery collation? and what equivalent collation should be?

    Thanks

    Phil

  • Just out of curiousity: did this database start its life on SQL Server 6.5? Way back then, you could defined your own collations (or sortorders as it was called then). I know, because I devised a sort order for Swedish that matched our needs. I don't recall exactly when the support for user-defined sort orders disappeared. It may have been with SQL 7, but it may also have been with SQL 2000 when they added all the collations.
