Microsoft Word Macro-Enabled Template RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I am a new user of Microsoft office 2016, every time when I finished editing a document, there will be a dialogue box pop out and said the document is in used by other program of the computer, and at the end of the action, it will suggest me to save the file in the format of Microsoft word Macro-Enabled Template.

May I know the usage of the template, and by the way how can I prevent Microsoft from creating such template automatically next time?

Thank you very much for the help.

  • Hi Shan,

    >> there will be a dialogue box pop out and said the document is in used by other program of the computer, and at the end of the action, it will suggest me to save the file in the format of Microsoft word Macro-Enabled Template.

By this, do you mean you got an error "The file is in use by another application or user. (C:\users\Username\AppData\...\normal.dotm)" followed by "Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dotm. Do you want to save those changes?"?

As for the message that suggested you to save the file in .dotm, it is generally caused by add-ins. I’d recommend you take the steps below to see the result:

    1. Make the Developer Tab visible by right-clicking on Ribbon > Customize the ribbon > select the check box of Developer.
    2. Click the Developer Tab, look under all Add-Ins buttons. Disable any suspicious add-ins.

As for the message “document is in used by other program”, it might have something to do with file permissions for the user templates folder. Please close Word, go to C:\Users\username\Documents\Custom Office Templates, check if there’s a file named  ~$Normal.dotm. The "~$" at the beginning of this filename indicates that it is a Windows "locking file" to prevent multiple users from accessing a file at one time. Please delete that file then check if it would fix the issue.

Hope it’s helpful. Please feel free to post back with any updates.

    Best Regards,
    Yuki Sun
