Quicktime 7.7.2.80.56 install error 1603 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Trying to push quicktime 7.7.2.80.56 via SCCM 2007 to XP & Win7, running into errors while distributing the actual quicktime.msi via SCCM.

    running it via msiexec /i quicktime.msi TRANSFORMS=quicktime.mst /qn (from command line this runs fine, just not from SCCM)

    Only changes I made to the MST initially were getting rid of the desktop icon. I did then try adding

    NOT BNEWERPRODUCTISINSTALLED - dropped that table - no luck

    InstallExecutiveSequence Set PreventDowngrade to 0 - did not help either.

    Severity Type Site code Date / Time System Component Message ID Description
    Error Milestone XXX 5/17/2012 8:53:58 AM WIN7_TEST-PC Software Distribution 10006 The program for advertisement "XXX200AC" failed ("XXX000A0" - "Quicktime 7.7.2"). A failure exit code of 1603 was returned.  User context: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM    Possible cause: Systems Management Server (SMS) determines status for each program it executes. If SMS cannot find or correlate any installation status Management Information Format (MIF) files for the program, it uses the program's exit code to determine status. An exit code of 1603 is considered a failure.  Solution: For more information on the exit code, refer to the documentation for the program you are distributing.

    I noticed when it does fail like this it leaves an entry in add/remove programs that doesnt allow you to uninstall it saying a newer version is installed. I saw plenty of people having this error with 7.7.1 (and tried fixes from those posts), was hoping apple would have fixed this in 7.7.2.....

  • Apple ... 'nuff said :-)

    Ultimately, this is a problem with their unique design and implementation of the MSI and going to an Apple forum for support may/should get you better answers.  (Not trying to minimize your issue or say it isn't real, just saying that they [Apple] created it and should have the knowledge to help you better than anyone here.)

  • I understand your pain. Have you tried installing using the exe wrapper? Not sure if that would help or not.

    How about a clean uninstall and re-install using a task sequence (assuming you are doing an upgrade)?

  • 1603 is a generic Windows Installer error message meaning something went wrong, but I don't know what. You'll have to enable verbose logging (using /l*v on the msiexec command-line) and examine the verbose log file.

  • Here it is running it manually from the command line on a machine where it failed with a 1603 via SCCM already. • The 1603 is coming from the app installation, not from Configuration Manager. If QuickTime is reporting that it cannot successfullyh install because a previous version is already installed, you'll need to contact Apple for support with the QuickTime installation problem you are running into.

  • OK, if my previous posts were confusing I apologize.....

    - Install quicktime 7.7.2 from command line (msiexec /i quicktime.msi TRANSFORMS=quicktime.mst /qn) on a fresh xp/win7 VM works fine (no previous version of quicktime ever installed on this machine, be it 7.7.2 or older).

    - Install quicktime 7.7.2 from SCCM using the same command line (msiexec /i quicktime.msi TRANSFORMS=quicktime.mst /qn) on a fresh xp/win7 VM fails with the said 1603 error (no previous version of quicktime ever installed on this machine, be it 7.7.2 or older).

    On the plain command line install ones that work fine you can reinstall/uninstall quicktime 7.7.2 just fine. On the SCCM deployed machines it does show quicktime in the add/remove programs but if you try to reinstall/uninstall it says there is a newer version already installed. If I manually delete HKCR\installer\products\890B46E081086524AB323C614AA39D0B I can then run the msi/mst install via command line sucessfully (and uninstall cleanly), but if I readvertise from SCCM it still fails. So if it is failing via SCCM but not failing via manual/command line...... (the slew of other apps I have run through SCCM are working fine, it is just this one little bugger that is uncooperative).

    I am having the same exact issue.  Just like you, I can install Quick-Time manually via the command line or via a bat file.  However when I use an app deployment in SCCM via task sequence the installation will fail.  I would be grateful for any ideas.

    Thanks

  • When you say 'on the SCCM deployed machines' are these machines that have been provisioned using OSD?

      From what you are saying, there is already a version of QuickTime installed on the machine, though, seems that it is in a corrupt state since you cannot manually uninstall it.

    SCCM is just returning the 1603 from the installer. I understand that when the command is executed manually it works and the 1603 is only returned when SCCM executes the installation... But when the instalation fails, what does the QuickTime installation log say?

     Are you attempting this process through a Task Squence?

    Thanks,

     Michael

  • Have you tried manually install? what error do you get then?

    I had the same problem in my environment and it was a problem related to one of the launch conditions in the Quicktime MSI.  The solution for me was to remove the row "NOT BNEWERPRODUCTISINSTALLED" from launchconditions  with a MST file and then it worked for me.

  • As noted in OP I have already tried dropping the row "NOT BNEWERPRODUCTISINSTALLED" from launchconditions with a MST file and it still has not worked for me.

    My post in this thread from Thursday, May 17, 2012 6:58 PM includes the install logs.

    The particular machines I am testing with are fresh VMs, be it manually created or created by OSD. Neither form of creation has ever had or currently has any version of quicktime installed. The install attempt is not through a task sequence, just regular ole' advertisement. Restated - no quicktime installed ever before these attempts.

    When installed through an sccm advertisement (even with "NOT BNEWERPRODUCTISINSTALLED" dropped from the MST) quicktime 7.7.2 does not correctly install, with the generic 1603 error. At that point the system is left in a "newer version already installed" state. If I manually strip out the registry entries (anything to do with {0E64B098-8018-4256-BA23-C316A43AD9B0}) it then lets me install it manually from the .exe, or even the command line (msiexec /i quicktime.msi TRANSFORMS=quicktime.mst /l quicktime.log) and there is no error that time. If I strip out the noted registry entry & readvertise via SCCM it once again fails.

  • I concur with the above - I can manually install QuickTime on our test computer without issue, however even when stripping all the reg keys out, using SCCM to deploy QuickTime results in the same error as above.

    I am using the exact same msiexec command within SCCM yet it always fails on the same error - A newer version of QuickTime is already installed.

  • Going back to an older method I have used before:

    1) Download the latest Quicktime exe from www.quicktime.com
    2) Create the
    folder Q:\Applications\Quicktime 7.6
    3) Copy the exe file into this
    folder
    4) In the same folder create a file called
    QuickTimeInstaller.ini
    5) Copy the following lines into the
    file:

    [QTSETUP]
    license_option=0
    no_dialogs=true
    registration_dialog=false
    supress_speed_dialog=true
    install_qtjava=false
    install_qd3d=true
    show_sample=false
    show_readme=false
    show_programfolder=false
    install_qtinfo=true

    In SCCM you can point it to the QuickTime.msi for checking if the app is already installed.

    You can launch the install from QuickTimeInstaller.exe /quiet

    Install the Apple Application Support msi seperately and voila, works nicely, you just then need to sort out deploying the quicktime.qtp file if you wish to customise the behaviour of QuickTime.

  • In taking Tanya_'s advice from http://www.itninja.com/question/silent-install-of-quicktime-7-71-80-42-on-windows I am able to build a sccm install/advertisement that does not go 1603 on me (dropping "NOT BNEWERPRODUCTISINSTALLED" is apparently just not enough) on XP or Win7. However now when I go to run the actual quicktime app itself it errors out on XP (works just fine on win7). On XP it gives me a mini setup. Run it a second time & it says problem with shortcut fatal error during installation. Repair install runs through, but upon launching the app it still gives the same error.

  • Yeah.... I posted this same issue to apple's forum (many others as well) on May 17th...... no responses.....Sadly I have had better support for an apple product on a microsoft forum :-). I hold no hope that I will receive any replies from the apple forums. I would be interested to see the .mst of anyone that does have a properly working win7/xp sccm install/advertisement for quicktime 7.7.2.....sure mine installs without a 1603 now but it leaves the program completely broken on XP...so that is still a fail.

  • I understand your pain. Have you tried installing using the exe wrapper? Not sure if that would help or not.

    How about a clean uninstall and re-install using a task sequence (assuming you are doing an upgrade)?

  • my be to late to help but might help others. I spent a week trying to get quicktime installed through SCCM. ive tried all the switches & combinations possible but it always failed. In the end Ive resulted to using a vbs file to do the install which works fine. You may notice the /qb switch for the msi. if you use /qn for silent it dosent install. When you install through sccm you dont seen the install screens with the /qb switch so its not a problem.

    package Directory Contains

    AppleApplicationSupport.msi

    AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi

    Install.vbs

    QuickTime.msi

    QuickTimeInstallerAdmin.exe

    The program for the package just point to the vbs file

    The vbs contains

    Option Explicit
    Dim WshShell, objFSO

    Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

       WshShell.Run "msiexec /i ""AppleApplicationSupport.msi"" /qb", 1, TRUE
       WshShell.Run "msiexec /i ""QuickTime.msi"" /qb QT_TRAY_ICON=NO SCHEDULE_ASUW=NO ASUWINSTALLED=NO", 1, TRUE

    Wscript.Quit

  • The VBS script trick didn't work for us. Nothing seemed to work, but Tanya's instructions actually worked with 7.72 on Windows 7 (ConfigMgr 2007 deployment). http://www.itninja.com/question/silent-install-of-quicktime-7-71-80-42-on-windows

  • Download the latest version of QuickTime (7.79.80.95) and extract to the shared folder \\servername\share\

    Run cmd prompt as an Administrator and execute the below command:

    msiexec.exe /i "\\servername\share\QuickTime.msi" /passive DESKTOP_SHORTCUTS=NO

    "DESKTOP_SHORTCUTS=NO" will suppress the creation of QuickTime desktop shortcut.

    This will silently install QuickTime Player on the machine/ If already installed, upgrade to the latest version 7.79.80.95 (will replace the previous version).

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    To uninstall the QuickTime Player (7.79.80.95):

    msiexec.exe /x {FF59BD75-466A-4D5A-AD23-AAD87C5FD44C} /qn /norestart
