Federated Search Connector for Google RRS feed

All replies

  • I did some research on this a while ago, and from what I remember, Google don't use the OpenSearch standard for their main search engine, so a federated search connector wouldn't work as it stands.

  • That`s my experience as well. Google does not provide an API which returns XML for free, so you would be left creating a proxy and parsing the xml over to RSS for this to work.

Google Custom Search has the ability to output xml, but you have to set up what sites it will include. Might be worth a try, and it will be an easier transformation over to RSS.

  • Seila,

Did you ever get this to work, and if so what was the effort?  We have a client that is looking for the OpenSearch as well for Google.

    Thanks.

  • We had similar development done 1 year ago, you should also make sure you are aware of the legal side of using google connector (custon developed). There are limitations (at least there were 1 year ago) something along the lines of no more than 64 results could be retrieved through the connector, it can be used internally (behind the firewall) only or it should be obvious that it is Google results so you are not disguising it as your own. Google might have lightened up on those limitations, but is worth checking out.
