Deleting large site collections - How long to wait before deleting the content DB from SQL?

    Question

  • I have full backups of this site collection and content DB and now I am deleting a large (1 TB+) site collection from Central Admin and saw a note about: "When you delete a large site, SharePoint removes data gradually for performance reasons."

I also know that deleting the site collection this way does not remove the actual content DB from SQL. So, my questions are:

How can I monitor the site collection deletion progress?

When is it safe to delete the content database?

    Thanks!

Answers

  • Hi,

You can access CA > Application Management > Manage content databases, check for the number of site collection under a content database.

If it’s zero, which means you can remove the content database from SQL.
