Approve Timesheets per Project RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi what is the general approach to approving timesheets per project ie for the Project Manager to approve time spent rather than the Timesheet Manager for all time spent? Is this via Progress Updating and Task approvals or can it be done via the Timesheet?

    thanks

  • There are several ways to do this and every company seems to do it different.

Timesheet approval is usually done by the resource manager and from my point of view is the most accurate data.  Once approved it can be pushed to the project manager.

Tasksheets approval is done by Project Manager time is pushed into project schedules.

Often a single form is used to contain both of the times in timesheet.

There are several scenarios that timesheets and approvals can be done.  My suggestion is to determine governance on how to manage and then setup environment to test.

  • Thanks Mike, so is the "pushing" to PMs for approval a management step ie not mechanised by Project Server?  Is my only option to get PMs to approve project time to use Task Updates & Approval?

    Thanks

  • There is no pushing of time.  The project manager must approve time using "Task Updates and Approval" for time to come into project schedule.  It can done with or without the resource managers time sheet approval.

Depending on setup, some PMO set up the resource managers and project managers as same person. Especially if they are on the same time. If it is matrix organization, then this may not be possible.
