Schema upgrade - Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

One of our customer, currently have the below configuration environment,

    Single domain Single forest

Domain and Forest Functional level - Windows 2008 R2

    6 (+1 DR) Windows 2008 R2 Writable Domain controllers

1 domain controller contains all FSMO roles

    500+ RODCs

Exchange 2007 with SP3 and RU13 for legacy applictions

The requirement is to introduce windows 2012 R2 writeable domain controllers and demote the existing windows 2008 R2 domain controller one by and retain the IP with new domain controllers

We are planning to transfer the Schema master to one domain controller and stop in bound and out bound replication run the ADPrep /Forestprep and ADPrep /Domainprep and after upgrade the schema version validate with existing exchange servers and then enable start the inbound and outbound replication.

    Our query is ,

Do we need to transfer any other role except Schema master to the domain controller where we plan to run ADPrep /foresprep and ADPREP/Domainprep.

(In our test environment , we tried the similar setup and moved the Schema master to one domain controller , stopped the inbount and outbound replication, then run the ADPREP /Forestprep successfully but we faced issue in running ADPrep /Domainprep until we enable the inbound and outbound replication)

Please share your inputs and recommendations .

    Thanks and Regards,
