Can't find Handles RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am running Process Explorer 14.11
A few months ago I upgraded my OS from Windows XP to 64-bit Windows 7 (SP1, all maintenance current).

One of the things I use Process Explorer for is, when a file access fails with "Access Denied", I use the "Process Explorer Search" dialog (from the "Find Handle or DLL" icon) and give it a piece of the file name and get a report of what processes own that file.

However, now after moving to Windows 7, the search often returns zero results.

Is this a known issue? Is there a solution?

    TIA

  • Latest Process Explorer is 16.25..

Are you running this or still the 14.11??

Always try with the latest one..

  • ProcessExplorer will only tell you if a file is opened by another process. Is it possible that you are seeing access denied because you don't have permissions to open the file and not because something else has it locked?

Could you try running Process Monitor and see what that reports and post the output here. If you believe there is still a problem could you provide a few more details (which file are you trying to open and how).
