How to Clean Up the Winsxs Folder in SBS 2011

Question
-
SBS 2011 Essentials SP1.
Our system drive (C:) is 60GB and running out of space. I notice that the winsxs folder is 25.5 GB. What is this used for and how can I clean it up (reduce its size)? Thanks for any help.

Hi,
This directory contains the rollback files for windows updates and causes often space issues.
I know two ways to clean it up , depending on the Windows version you are running:
<run in a command-prompt with admin rights>
Method 1: DISM.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /spsuperseded
Method 2: VSP1CLN.EXE
Remarks:
Can you try both methods without any risk , if you don't have the corresponding Windows-version it will simply not run.
If one method works you don't need to run the other.
Regards,
M

Olaf:
Thanks for the reply. I followed the instructions and was able to free up 6.1 GB. That makes my winsxs folder now 19.4GB (was 25.5). Is there anything else we can do to reduce the winsxs folder further?

Just ran the cleanup and now rather than being 6.1 GB more space, it reduced free space by 2GB. Yikes! What could be wrong?Friday, November 13, 2015 4:56 PM

Did you reboot yet?
