WinPE 10 drivers for HP and Dell Servers RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am new to MDT and have installed MDT 2013 Update 1 which comes with WinPE 10. We are running HP ProLiant Servers and Dell servers in our environment. We plan on using MDT to help automate deployment of  Windows Server 2012 R2.

My question is regarding drivers. Are we going to run into issues finding compatible drivers for our servers since WinPE 10 is based Windows 10? For example will downloading a driver for Windows Server 2012 R2 from HP's site work in the WinPE 10 environment?

  • I think Windows 8.1/WinPE 5 drivers may work, or may not. In general, I have had issues using MDT with servers, all due to drivers.

They have RAID cards, fiber nic cards, and other hardware that is hard to find 32-bit drivers for. We use a 32-bit WinPE boot image.

You can use a 64-bit boot image for just servers, but its a pain to have two. Sometimes going to the hardware vendor sight as opposed to Dell or HP site can get you the drivers you need.

  • Frankly unless drivers are missing in WinPE you won't need to add them to the PE boot image.

Logs are very important. https://keithga.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/video-mdt-2013-log-files-basics-bdd-log-and-smsts-log/ Mention any customizations you have made.
