  • try all the steps from this KB article first:

"Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" error when you try to install Windows updates
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358/en-us

If this doesn't work, we must look for error messages in the following log files to see the cause of Windows 8 update failures:

Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy all files to your document folder, also copy the file C":\Windows\Inf\setupapi.dev.log" , the "C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log" and the file "C:\Windows\winsxs\poqexec.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it), zip all files into 1 ZIP and upload the zip to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here.

If you can't even boot into Windows, boot from the WIn8 DVD, go to the recovery options, select Command Prompt and run this command to revert the pending changes:

    DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

(replace C: with the drive where you installed Windows)

  • Hi,

    I agree with Andre.Ziegler.

In addition, you may try to boot into Last Known Good Configuration.

    Using Last Known Good Configuration

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Using-Last-Known-Good-Configuration

If you cannot boot into safe mode you may have corrupted files or bad hardware.

    1. From the Bood CD, try chkdsk /r and if that does not do it try sfc /scannow.

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us

    2. Remove any add-on cards and disable NIC, modem and others from BIOS then try to boot.

    3. If the issue persists, you may perform an in-place upgrade to check the issue.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2

    Hope it works.

  • If the message is still displayed after switching off it is just going into standby not powering down.

Hold the power button for 6 seconds in order to force the computer off completely and see if it will reapply the problem update.

Also I fail to see how the response from Blair can be marked as the answer when it for the wrong operating system. Getting in to the boot menu is impossible with Windows 8

  • I'm having the same problem as Baljinder33.  My laptop is stuck on "Failure configuring Windows features...."

I have powered off and even removed the battery.  It begins to boot up but then stops at the same message.  The hard drive light flickers randomly as if it is working, but it stays on this screen.  I cannot get anything else. Please help.
