Hiding Update and Restart on WSUS client configured for Automatic Updates

    Question

  • We have a few Server 2012 R2 workgroup clients that are configured to install updates at 3:00 AM at certain days. We noticed that after configuring these settings, the Restart option on the Start menu changed to "Update and Restart". We have to restart our servers sometimes during the day and don't want to risk having someone accidentally choose that option which would start installing updates that we'd rather have done after hours. We'd like to hide this option and put back a Restart option.

Is there a supported way to accomplish this? This is what our policies look like

  • Hi Sandy,

First, if you see the Update and restart on start menu, it means there are updates need install through restarting.

If you just want to restart computer, you could create the registry key NoAUShutdownOption and set its value to 1. The path is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU.

  • As per my understanding, updates have already been installed and it required a reboot after installation.

Can you check if updates have been installed ? If yes, then on reboot updates will anyhow install/finalise.

A better option wil be a force reboot post installation.
