how to configure the default storage size for a DPM 2010 client when they registering with the DPM 2010 server RRS feed

  • Question

  • is there a configuration, setting or option which sets the default storage area allocated to a client when they first register to a DPM 2010 Server ?

Currently the default allocation is 65Gb per client, i'd like to allocate a smaller size or even range of sizes based on the group that the client belongs to.

thanks for any comments, suggestions or details on how to configure the default storage allocation when a client registers on a DPM 2010 server

  • Hi,

When you configure client protection - in the PG wizard, it asks for the amount of data per client you expect to backup.  The Default for "Data per computer" is 5GB.    By default, DPM will co-locate 10 clients per Replica / Diff volume, so you will see by default DPM will allocate 61.56 GB the first time you create the PG.  This is assuming 10 clients at 5GB / client.

You can create multiple PG's for client protection and each have it's own Data Per Computer be smaller or larger based on the role of the user using the laptop.  This is NOT a quota, it is just an estimate of how much data is expected to be protected on each client so DPM can cretae the volumes to protect that amount of data.

You can also choose not to co-locate - but doing that will reduce the number of client computers the DPM server can protect.  We can protect 1000 clients if co-location is enabled, only 300 if not using co-location.
