Unable to DCPROMO - Server Manager 0x80070490 Errors RRS feed

  • attempting to demote an old Server 2008SP2 Machine I'm experiencing the following issues.  

    1. start, run - dcpromo gives an error "Failed to detect if Active Directory Domain Services binaries were installed. The error was: Element Not Found

    2. checking roles in Server Manager yeilds error "Unexpected Error refreshing Server Manager: Element Not Found. (Exception from HRESULT 0x80070490)

    Combing through previous similar errors on the internet indicates running Update Rediness tool.  Log is pasted below.

  • Are you trying to repair or just remove? If the latter you can follow along here to perform metadata cleanup, then just remove server from network.
