Sharepoint node not showing up in DPM when creating a new protection group RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I've seen similar questions in this forum section and read them all... my problem seems to be different. Title says it all. Trying to protect a sharepoint 2010 WFE with DPM 2012 and the sharepoint node is not showing up. Only the 'all shares', 'all volumes' and 'system protection'. The account used is local admin on the DPM server and the sharepoint WFE and is also farm administrator.

    Steps taken so far:

    - installed DPM Agent on the WFE using the local admin/farm admin account above.

    - ran configuresharepoint.exe -enablesharepointprotection with elevated privileges using the local admin/farm admin account (all ok)

-ran setdpmserver.exe -servername S2922P (thats our DPM server) with elevated privileges. (all ok)

I can see the firewall rules are created but since it's a domain network the firewall is turned off so that shouldn't be the issue, right?

I tried STSADM -o unregisterwsswriter and registered it again, reboots, reinstall agent and so on. Nothing works.

I am pretty much pulling my hair out about what's going on and thinking about opening an official support ticket with Microsoft but I decided to consult the experts here first. What am I missing? There are no errors in the event log showing up.

  • Hi Arthur,

This may sound stupid and simple but it is good to cover all basses and I have seen this happen before. Are you protecting the SQL instance that hosts the SharePoint databases in DPM already? If so are you protecting it at the instance level? If so SharePoint wont show when you go to add it to protection.

  • Hi Buchatech, thank  you for your reply. During my IT career I have found that stupid and simple things often hold the solution and are overlooked, so no worries about that.

We are indeed protecting the SQL Instance S2917P hosting the sharepoint (content) databases in DPM already. I have enclosed the following images for your convenience. In DPM the nodes look like these.

When I expand the SQL server it looks like we are protecting them at the instance level already. Now we are trying to add the WFE 'S2918P' but the sharepoint icon does not show up. You are saying I need to unprotect the SQL server, then protect the WFE? So I need to protect the WFE first, then the corresponding database server?

    Hi Arthur,

Ok so you are protecting the SharePoint databases at the instance level through SQL already. Yes you need to un-select those SharePoint DB's at the instance level and protect them through SharePoint protection in DPM. What you will notice after you do that is that you can no longer protect them at the SQL level. SharePoint protection actually backs up the databases. You can continue protecting your non-SharePoint databases at the SQL level. Try that and let us know how it goes.

  • For comparison; this is how it should be on another WFE 'S2924P' which seems to work like it should:

Since I wasn't involved in setting up DPM initially I don't know the order in which these servers were added to DPM. But I do know I compared the dpm (error) logs and WSS Writers and registry settings on a working and non-working WFE's. The only thing which caught my attention in the error log on the non-working WFE's was the line:

    1F0C    11F8    04/15    12:00:18.947    03    schannelutils.cpp(129)        5D3FDFF7-DF4F-4E96-A5DE-011B52ECEFC4    WARNING    Failed: Hr: = [0x80070002] : Error trying to open RegKey [HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent\2.0\Certificates\S2919P.Domain1.Local]

This did not show up in the errorlog of the WFE's which worked (example the S2924P). To me this looks like DPM is somehow trying to force certificate authentication but I find this weird since the DPM and WFE servers are both in the same trusted active directory domain and the agent is installed as such.

That is interesting if both WFE's are in a trusted domain. There would be no reason to have certificate authentication in place. If making changes to the SQL protection does not help you may want to try removing and re-installing the DPM agent on the WFE that is not working.

  • Hi Buchatech, I started again from scratch by deleting all the protection groups and protected data. Suddenly I was able to see the sharepoint node on the WFE S2918P. But then I was not able to see the sharepoint node on the S2924P which previously worked. It seems that my problem is the same as in this thread and DPM seems to be unable to protect multiple sharepoint farms on one DPM server:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dpmsharepointbackup/thread/8266ea77-4250-457b-88ec-97c792431856

I will continue to look for a solution for this, but the most important part is that I can reproduce it now. Thanks for your efforts! If I discover something I will post it in the thread mentioned above.
