Inconsistencies in TechNet KB numbers RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have acquired the KB list Excel sheet from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36982

Inisde the Excel, there are numerous references to KB 3081434, for instance in MS15-080.

When you go to MS15-080 (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms15-080.aspx), and scroll down to Windows 10, we see the KB is actually 3081436. Then, if you click on the link, you get sent to 3081435.

One vulnerability, three numbers! The worst part is, I found out 3081436 is the correct KB, but I didn't acquire it through Windows Update. I had to open the KB page in Internet Explorer, download the EXE and go through updating the manual route.

Why is this data so inconsistent and why is this far reaching patch with tons of patched vulnerabilities not automatically updated through Windows Update?

  • Another issue, some vulnerabilities KB patches aren't referenced in the Excel spreadsheet at all. An example; https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3087916

  • Hi SPD88,

I have tried to download these KB from Microsoft Update Catalog.
The KB3081434 and KB3081435 doesn`t exist actually. Only KB3081436 is available.
