Windows Backup not seeing a USB Drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

I want to use a USB drive (256Gb) to backup a Dell server using Windows backup.  The USB drive was updated with diskpart to have only one partition formatted NTFS 4096 bytes and correctly shows up in explorer.  However when in the Windows backup and adding a schedule the destination list (after 'Show all available disks) only shows the PERC H730P drives and a IDSM USB drive but not the newly formatted USB drive.

How can I get the new drive in the list to target it?

  • Interestingly though if I create a folder on said USB drive and share it, Windows Backup is able to accept that as a 'shared network folder' destination and will then work.  I suspect that this would not be an efficient way to back up as it only keeps one copy.
