Navigation pane and items view (list view) simultaneously selecting different things - both panes showing focus. RRS feed

  • I understand the "Automatically expand to current folder" option, which updates the left pane as the folders are navigated in the right pane.  However, there seems to be no way to ensure that navigation in the left pane is synchronizes (or updates) the view in the right pane.  Further, when the focus is in the right pane, the selected item in the left pane goes from active to grey, as it should.  However, when you are in the left pane, the right pane remains actively selected.  You can then navigate in the left pane using the up/down arrow, or the left arrow, and the right pane will continue to appear to be actively selected on the old item.

As a developer, I do folder management a lot, and in the two months I've been using Windows 7, I have accidentally deleted entire directory structures several times.  Usually I am comparing a tip branch to a release branch, and as I am going back and forth, I'll somehow select a top-level folder, but when I see my intended sub-file or subfolder actively selected in the right pane, I press delete (or worse shift-delete) and then wonder why so much stuff is being removed.  By the time I press cancel, I have no idea what I have deleted.

I think this is a serious usability issue.  At the very least, please consider graying the selection in the item view when the focus is in the navigation pane.  Please.
